Educators & Staff

Elizheva Hurvich, Rosh
Elizheva serves as Netivot Shalom's Youth and Family Education Director. She loves Hebrew, loves to sing, loves sharing time with young people, and she absolutely loves being Jewish. Working at Netivot Shalom is an opportunity to help others find meaningful experiences through Torah and Jewish values. She feels blessed and lucky to be here.

Talia Young, teaching Tefilla and Synagogue Skills
Talia is excited to teach the 6th and 7th grade Tefillah classes at  Netivot Shalom. Since graduating from Macalester College in 2017, she has worked in Jewish education as a NFTY advisor in Minneapolis, as a Jewish Outdoor Educator at Teva in Connecticut, and as a unit head at Ramah in the Rockies. Talia loves singing, identifying trees, and teaching about Judaism's Earth-based roots. She can't wait to explore prayer, delving into both the meaning of the words and their personal meaning to us. Talia wants to explore with the students if they want to prioritize kavannah (heartfelt intention) or kavua (fixed routine) in prayer, and to explore what it means to lead, and build community in the process.

Rob Bonem, teaching Jewish Lifecycle
Rob is a Jewish educator, spiritual counselor, and life coach. He has taught in several synagogues in the Bay area and is excited to be rejoining Netivot Shalom (he taught here once before). He is also excited to help the Amitim kids on their way to Jewish adulthood. Rob has recently returned from his 20th trip to Israel, where he spent 3 months studying and praying at the Western Wall. He once spent a few months working as a shepherd in the Galilee.

Shoshana Fendel, Madrich
I'm Shoshana and I'm a senior at Berkeley High School. I attend Midrasha (a Jewish teen program). This summer, I went to two countries outside of the U.S. (Canada and the Netherlands) and six states outside of California (Alaska, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts)! My favorite ice cream flavor is mint chocolate chip, my favorite holiday is either Pesach or Shavuot, and I love reading Torah. I'm excited to teach at Amitim again this year!

Nitzan Bochner Loewenberg, Madrich
I’m Nitzan, a senior at Berkeley High. I am also in USY (United synagogue youth) and serve as a member of our regional board. I love rock climbing and hanging out with friends. I enjoy teaching at Amitim because it’s great to be around such a large amount of enthusiasm and energy!

Simcha Wrinkle, Madrich I’m honored to be teaching our Amitim students again this year. I’ve been fortunate enough to have some wonderful opportunities working with kids in the past, as a part of teams at Camp Kee Tov, Berkeley Day Camp, Aurora Day School, Ketzev, and Amitim. I’m a senior at Berkeley High School, and planning to follow this passion I have for working with young people by studying Child Development and Psychology. I look forward to getting to be a part of this new Amitim community!

Serena Heaslip, Support
At Amitim, Serena's roles are: Welcoming, Snack Making, Administrative Help, Communication, Helping students, parents, and staff. Serena works as staff and as a volunteer for Amitim. She's very happy to help with the program and is dedicated to the youth. One of Serena's daughters is a happy alumni of Amitim, and the other daughter is a current 7th grade student.

Larry Hanover, Volunteer
Larry was raised in the back room of a deli/food shop in Chicago by Holocaust survivor parents from Poland. My Jewish education was a combination of Orthodox and conservative tropes. I’ve been a Psychologist working with public sector kids and families in both clinical and administrative roles. I love the rhythm of Jewish life and always enjoy sharing it with young people.
